My family owned a few different stockyards from sometime in 1970’s until late 70’s with the first, from the sale of the first thru until 88’ with the second (first I remember and the time I can’t remember much of my Granddad or Father because runs were huge in the 80’s and we had two sales a week one on weds and more of a stock cow sale on Sat although they sold slaughter and feeder cattle if that’s what was brought in, and finally after a break of which I didn’t get away from the salbarn business at all with my dad managing a barn for the years between selling in 88 and 94 when we basically completely rebuilt and drastically added on more barn to a dairy cow auction barn and turned it into a beef cattle auction where I was between 10 and 25 years old so it’s the first barn I actually worked and eventually helped manage beside my Dad and slowing grandfather until he couldn’t do what he thought he had to do anymore and with too many family members wanting to put there hands in the cookie jar they added no value or even simple labor to at all. So I’ve heard that sound of a stockyard full of cattle, the faint sound of the auctioneer, and the sound of my cousin calling out the pen the next goes in mumbling in my head when I’d get in a really quiet place after the sale was over. It’s mostly just the bawling cattle but you can pick out the unrecognizable of course sound of the pen number being called out as well. I’m not the only one I’ve talked to who had this echo of the days work in their ears after the sale was done and leaving the stockyard. It gets pretty darn loud and really hot (in summer around 130*F) with anywhere over 1000 head inside a fully roofed stockyard and I think it along with music has caused me to have some bad hearing for my age. Anyway it’s great seeing such wonderfully trained dogs.

I've been in the cattle business my whole life with my family having our own cattle, preconditioning cattle for larger outfits, and at the Stockyard my family owned most of my life and therefore had to catch our own cattle and a lot of times catch customers cattle usually in badly designed and poorly maintained catch lots. Also we got the call everytime the local Police had one out on the HWY or even once along the interstate and with government ghetto housing apartments on the other side. Also a lot of farmers called us if they had one out or too wild to catch. Anyway when we couldn’t, didn’t want to, or were too busy to do it we had one main guy we would call named George Gillipsi and he was the most cowboy of cowboys you ever saw but also a rare type cattleman or cowboy in Northern Alabama because he is a black man. That really didn’t matter of course but I mentioned it only because of the fact it is so rare to see a black man involved in the cattle business outside of a few hobby farmers I’ve met who wouldn’t be considered a Cowboy like George. George had a flat bed f-350 with a huge custom built dog box full of dogs on it and they worked just like this except he swapped dogs in and out like it was a football game and brought in dogs that would push harder to get them in the catch lot. He also had dogs that could bay single wild cattle up or truly catch and drop one if needed. I only witnessed that being necessary once with what I can only call the wildest bitch cow I ever laid eyes on that caused me two days work when we got her in the Stockyard trying to jump outta every pen, then tag in chute, the scale chute, and after she sold. She almost killed me a few times going thru these steps of destruction and I was happy when she got on an 18 wheeler headed for slaughter. That said I never saw that his dogs had the ability to load cattle directly on a trailer like this guy has his dogs do on other videos of his. Now I never saw him try and his best dogs have to be as capable as any but IDK. I forgot he is super quiet like this guy it’s a lot of whistles, a few half understandable words, and the dogs names. Even getting one or five in or out of the dog box is the dogs name and get in the box or get out of the box. It’s all quite remarkable to watch in person as I know this guy would be.

This is one of the ways the human-dog relationship all started a very long time ago. They say hunting was first but it quickly evolved into a type of hunting/ herding with Stone Age and I'm positive Bronze Age people building lanes with branches and bushes along the sides and even sometimes ditches as well. These lanes would lead game into certain kill sites and eventually lead grazing animals like sheep into different fields the person wanted grazed or closer to what had then become much more, then, truly permanent dwellings. I know at one point archeologists and pre-historians didn't think stone age sheep could be herded by dogs but others have proven that to be untrue in recent decades. That means something we call farming was probably happening in Stone Age Britain in a time most thought was all hunter-gatherer and therefore pre civilization as they call anything before people settled down to plant and farm crops they could store. Btw I like that trailer and what great dogs.

Why do you not have a RAMP???? Is it okay, while the cow is struggling to climb up and in to keep commanding the dog to “Push em up”! And the dogs getting kicked! Then the cow gets out of order & you start all over to get her to get in line to climb up, AGAIN! Kinda sloppy if you ask me.
